DENTAL FILLINGS

One of dentistry’s most basic and traditional treatments are Dental fillings. They improve the health and beauty of teeth that have been compromised by such things as decay, chips, fractures, cracks, or are just worn down. Such teeth are prepared by removing decayed or affected portions, then filled with a strong dental material to restore their original size and proportions.

There are many types of filling materials available. Teeth can be filled with gold, porcelain, or the two most widely-used options: composite fillings and silver amalgam fillings each has advantages and disadvantages.

Silver fillings have been used in dentistry for over 100 years and health concerns have been raised because they contain 50% mercury. This filling material also contains copper, tin and zinc. Dr. Miskin has chosen not to use amalgam fillings for his patients. In fact, Dr. Miskin often replaces these older silver fillings with the newer, tooth-colored material.

Dr. Miskin routinely uses dental composite for fillings. These composites are insoluble, as hard as enamel, stain-resistant, insensitive to dehydration and best of all they also match tooth colour and most importantly they require less removal of your tooth structure than amalgam fillings.

Composites are extremely durable, and will last many years giving you a long lasting, beautiful smile. Because composite fillings are tooth coloured, they can be closely matched to the color of existing teeth, and are more aesthetically suited for use in front teeth or the more visible areas of the teeth.
